Who is “Sarge”?
“My nickname has been ‘Sarge’ for so long that I can’t remember the story why, but everyone in my family had a nickname like Bob or Jethro. Most of the names come from something bizarre. In my family, if you don’t have a nickname, you’re probably not part of the family. ” – Darrin Patten
Since 1919
The Barn has Remained in the Family
Darrin’s grandfather bought the property in 1919 and rebuilt part of it in 1928. At the time, there was a walkway into the barn, and the structure included tie-ups for a dozen cows and two horses. Scaffolding above the cows created an area where hay could be loaded onto a platform in the top portion of the barn. Then, using a complex system of pulleys, a hay fork could be manipulated to scoop and transport the hay, dropping it to either side of the platform to the livestock below.

It has Operated as Sarge’s Garage
The area where Darrin and his team now work on cars used to have a wooden floor with holes to dispose of manure, but luckily Darrin repurposed the barn, replacing the main floor with cement, pouring a new wall, and filling in the cellar with gravel.
Despite the garage opening in 1993, Darrin has actually been repairing engines far longer. His first customer brought a lawn mower to Darrin for a repair in 1982 after he had taken a small engines class, and that customer still brings his vehicles to Darrin’s shop to this day!

The owner and original mechanic at Sarge’s, as well as its namesake! Darrin is active in the community, and many consider him “the guy” to ask about almost anything in Springfield.
Justin Hastings, Mechanic
The first addition to the Sarge’s Garage family, always cheerful Justin has been a valuable member of the team for years. He’ll tell you that he’s happy to work on anything with tires.
Violet, Customer Service
The heart of our mechanic’s shop. With a friendly demeanor and unwavering loyalty, this pup adds a welcoming touch to our service. Violet is in charge of greeting customers upon arrival.
